ISET, Inc. Awarded a Phase II SBIR Contract by the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) - 07/25/2005

Company Press Release

CHATSWORTH, California -  ISET, Inc. announced today that it has been awarded a phase II contract for an undisclosed amount by the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) to develop thin film CIGS photovoltaics on flexible ceramic substrates for application on High Altitude Airships (HAA).  ISET, Inc. receives this contract after having previously been awarded a phase I contract in June 2004, initiating a promising collaboration between the two entities.  The MDA is presently evaluating the use of ISET’s patented ink based technology for fabricating printed CIGS solar cells to power HAA flying in near-space atmosphere at an altitude of 60,000 - 70,000 ft.  The key parameters in favor of ISET’s solar cells are high specific power density (>1.0 kW/kg), high efficiency and stability of solar cells against the high energy radiation in space.

“We are pleased to see that the MDA recognizes the potential of ISET’s ink based technology for fabricating high specific power CIGS solar cells on light weight and flexible substrates.” said Dr. Vijay Kapur, President of ISET, Inc.

ISET has already demonstrated fabrication of high efficiency CIGS solar cells on glass under contracts from NREL (DOE) and on metal and polyimide foils under contracts from AFRL.  With this contract from MDA, ISET will be able to extend the application of its patented technology to novel flexible and lightweight substrates.  Thin film CIGS solar cells are known to be resilient against radiation damage and, in the family of the thin film solar cells, they offer the potential for achieving the highest efficiencies (~20%).  ISET’s ink based ‘additive’ process has very high materials utilization, uses low cost equipment and potentially can lower the cost of manufacturing CIGS solar modules significantly from that of crystalline silicon solar cells.  While continuing development work for fabricating monolithically integrated sub-modules on polyimide for AFRL, ISET is moving ahead to commercialize its low cost process for manufacturing CIGS solar cells/modules on glass.

About the Missile Defense Agency (MDA)

The Missile Defense Agency is a government agency under the Department of Defense (DoD) whose mission is to develop, test and prepare for deployment of a missile defense system.  The partnership of ISET with the MDA is funded through an SBIR (Small Business Innovative Research) grant.  The SBIR programs were mandated by Congress to provide research and development support to small businesses to stimulate the conversion of prototype technologies into commercial products.

About ISET, Inc.

International Solar Electric Technology (ISET) has over 20 years of experience in research and development of thin film materials and photovoltaic (solar) cells for industrial and government applications.  ISET is an industrial leader in advanced CIGS (Copper Indium Gallium Di-Selenide) thin film photovoltaics using a patented nano-particle ink technology.  These developments enable ISET’s products to be lightweight, flexible, customizable, and capable of mass-production on a variety of substrates.  Since 1985, ISET has received nearly $17 million in funding from federal, state agencies, California state and private corporations.  ISET's state of the art laboratories are housed in a 6500 ft2 facility in Chatsworth, California.  ISET has worked with organizations such as the Department of Defense (DOD), Department of Energy (DOE), California Energy Commission (CEC), Department of Commerce (DOC), NASA, Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), and a number of public and private universities and corporations.  For more information, visit http://www.isetinc.com or contact Dr. Vijay K.
