Vijay K. Kapur Ph.D, MBA Founder, President, & CEO

Dr. Vijay K. Kapur founded ISET in 1985 and has nearly 40 years of extensive experience in photovoltaics covering R&D‚ manufacturing and sales. He has established ISET’s culture of leadership and innovation‚ positioning ISET to achieve sustained growth in a complex and rapidly evolving

industry climate.

As a pioneer of low-cost‚ high-efficiency PV technologies‚ Dr. Kapur has continuously driven initiatives covering technology advancement‚ strategic partnerships, and PV market development, with the goal to strengthen widespread adoption of affordable PV power generation. Dr. Kapur is the originator of techniques to produce CIGS solar cells from nanoparticle inks as well as by electroplating.

Prior to the founding of ISET‚ Dr. Kapur served as Director of Applied Research for ARCO Solar from 1979 to 1984. He worked on various aspects of PV technology at ARCO‚ including device processing‚ battery development and PV system design. He made major contributions by developing manufacturing processes that have become industry standards for thin-film CIGS as well as for crystalline silicon solar cells.

From 1976 to 1979‚ prior to joining Arco Solar‚ Dr. Kapur worked at Stanford Research Institute (SRI International) where he developed the unique sodium reduction method for low-cost production of silicon for solar cells that is being commercialized today.

Earlier in his career‚ Dr. Kapur operated a high-volume Chlor-alkali chemical manufacturing plant for DCM Shriram Consolidated Ltd. in India before serving from 1963 to 1968 as a Scientific Officer with India’s prestigious Department of Atomic Energy at Bhabha Atomic Research Center (BARC).

He received his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania and an MBA from the University of California‚ Los Angeles (UCLA). He holds 9 patents and has published more than 50 papers relating to PV technology.

Many of Dr. Kapur’s numerous innovations have become lasting contributions to the field of photovoltaics‚ including those listed below:

  • Inventor of Copper-Indium-diSelenide/Cadmium Sulfide (CdS)/TCO PV device construction.
  • Inventor of Electrodeposition Methods for CIS/CIGS semiconductor formation.
  • Developed 2-stage process for CIGS (precursor deposition + Selenization)
  • Developed first practical Nickel-Hydrogen battery for use in terrestrial PV systems.
  • Developed silicon wafer sawdust recovery process.
  • Developed the Post-Diffusion Etch process critical for successful high-yield manufacturing of crystalline-silicon solar cells.

Dr. Kapur remains one of the solar industry’s most active thin-film PV leaders‚ speaking regularly about ISET’s unique technology and production operations at industry and scientific events around the world.
